The term ‘Hindu Atheist’ has become highly contentious. Hindu Atheism has many different meanings to different people depending on what context one use the word Hindu, whether religious, cultural or civilisational.
So, when one identifies onself as Hindu athiest, either he subscribe to any of the various non-theistic or athesitic school of thoughts that originated from India, or simply affliates oneself to the Cultural aspects of Hindu Civilization without having any theological or denominational beliefs.
Please see :- What exactly is the hindu identity?
If one understand Hindu as faith based, Hindu Atheist would be an oxymoron and absolutely idiotic.
If as cultural unit, calling oneself Hindu Atheist would be someone who identities with cultural aspects.
At a Civilizational level Hindu Atheist is synonymous with Indian atheist.
The narrative of rationalism & atheism in India has been largely dominated or Hijacked by the Left. In the west, atheists like Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins, etc. went on to greater lenghts in studying the Judeo-Christian & Islamic culture’s history as well as their texts & theology to posit a proper critiques of those denominations. At the same time most of the western thinkers don’t shy away from owning up their civilizational heritage. They frequently quote or take influences from Epicurus, Seneca, Marcus Aurelius, Diogenes, Plato, Socrates, Heraclitus, Spinoza, etc. Such type of phenomenon is hardly present in India.
Similar is the case with the narrative of Hindu culture or Hinduism, being almost completely dominated by the Bhakti Cults or “Sanatanis” or Apologetics like Arya Samaj, Agniveer, etc. Much to the ignorance the general populace, there existed well established schools of rationalism, logic, atheism originating in Axial Age India.
There’s a huge gap in between these two extremes of Western Imitating Atheism/Communism and Bhakti Cult Sanatanis. People who aren’t necessarily religious or believers in any of the Indian Theology, who see the shortcomings of hinduism/hindu culture, but still identify with it in cultural or civilizational sense; People who observe the festivals not because of the theological/mythological beliefs associated with them but because of their significance in the culture; People who take great interest in The Epics(Mahabharata or Ramayana) or Sanskrit literature while not abiding by the belief in their historicity(completely), celeberting them nonetheless. There’s hardly any represenation for these kinda folk.
Other than that as I have mentioned that there exists whole legacy of rational thought in India which is being undermined, neglected, forgotten and even suppressed by both the extremeties. I have hardly seen anyone ever quoting Kapila, Jinasena, Akṣapāda Gautama, Kaṇāda, Maskarī Gośālīputra, Ajita Keśakambala, Saṃjaya Vairāṣṭrikaputra, etc for critiquing Indian Religosity or creationism.
Another concerning issue that I observed is lack of proper philosophical counters to Hindu religions from the contemporary atheists and so called rationalists in India or even from the west. In all of my readings untill now, the most vehement, brutal, harsh & veracious crticism of Hinduism, Hindu customs & traditions, I have found has come from people like Savarkar, Osho, Vivekananda, etc, people who were well versed in Indian Philosophical thought and were opposed & even suppressed by both the aforementioned extreme groups. Much of the time Most of the Indian Atheists, that I’ve encountered simply immitate western thinkers, which results in a very superficial and monochromatic take on Indian religosity.
So I felt like there needs to be a forum where one can freely, properly, philosophically and objectively as well as subjectively analyze, critique the things that need to be criticized about Hinduism while also being aware about different aspects of this culture at the same time. Also where one can find detailed proper philosophical counters to Indian Creationism, which is much more nuanced and complex than Abrahamic religions as well as talk about the plethora of non-theological aspects of Hindu culture.
I am aware of there are many out their who masquerade as “hindu atheist”, criticize all religions, but can’t tolerate any criticism of hindu traditions. They believe in all “way of life”, nonsense, like religious hindu do and also talk about the past utopian glories of Hindu Civilization. In some cases I’ve observed it’s born out of false sense of pride rising out of inferiority complexes. That’s what has made the term so contentious, in most cases. But One of the major purposes of starting this site and page is also to counter them.
So in conclusion, This site is attempt to counter the atheistic narrative propogated by Leftists as well as the standardizations propagated by theistic Hindus and most importantly to promote critical thinking amongst hindus for self and for others.!!!
Also have a look :- What is the Hindu identity? What is Hindu, Hinduism, Hindutva, Sanatan Dharma? Who is a Hindu? Is Hinduism a ‘religion’, just like any other normal conventional religion?
We will touch a variety of topics here including ancient hindu/Indian philosophies, Indian Epic literature, mythology, history, hindutva and other related topics.
